March 2021

It’s been a very busy month! As more and more people get vaccinated more and more people are out and about. Life is definitely not back to normal, but I can tell that the pace of life is picking up. We hadn’t flown since January 2020, so it was exciting to get back to Louisiana and spend time in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. There are things that you see in New Orleans that you just don’t see anywhere else ... like Saint Drew Brees next to Saint RBG. And we love it!! The culture, the food, the sights, the sounds! It’s all so much fun. If you ever need tips or recommendations on where to go in New Orleans or Baton Rouge, we can hook you up.

As you can see in the photo below, Bourbon St was hoppin’  ... wedding dresses, shrimp boots and all :)

But this is a blog about art, so let’s dive in and recap the month.

1. I’m settling in at Roswell Square Gallery! RSG is an art gallery and artist collective. We have about a dozen or so artists who all pitch in on the cost of the space. We show our work and quite a few of us paint on site. It’s a really cute space, right on the Roswell Square. We’re having an open house on Saturday, April 17th, so I’m really looking forward to that.

2. I wrapped up my six week flower painting course with Elizabeth Floyd. Here are the paintings we worked on in March. These are not complete, but I’ll wrap them up soon.

3. I painted flowers from my garden and flowers that I picked up at the store:

4. I also painted a few still life scenes:

5. And some abstracts:

5. Cafe Anis held a call for art. I submitted 4 paintings for consideration. They chose 1 to hang in the restaurant and it sold in less than a week! Very exciting!

They requested “Pink Tulips” to replace the sold painting:

6. I submitted 3 paintings to the “Spring Fling” exhibition at Colony Square. Two were accepted and one, “Pocket Squares,” received an honorable mention!

7. Scott and I helped install the show at Colony Square, along with fellow artists Armando Chacon and Kathy Rennell Forbes.

8. I submitted two paintings to the Booth Artists Guild exhibition at the Borderlands Gallery in the museum. One was accepted:

9. I submitted 3 paintings to the East Meets West show at Atlanta Artists Center. 1 was accepted:

And it was chosen by an Ikebana floral artist for interpretation:

PERSONAL

I’m still volunteering one day a week at Mercedes Benz stadium. We’ve gone from vaccinating a little more than 1,000 a day to vaccinating nearly 10,000 thanks to the assistance of FEMA and soldiers from Fort Stewart. Every day is different at The Benz. Some days I help with traffic flow and other days, like Tuesday, I was a vaccine runner. What does a vaccine runner do? I basically float from table to table and see how many syringes (“sticks”) are needed at each station, then I go to the nurse tech table and let them know how many we need. As I’m sure you’ve read in the news, vaccines have to be kept at a certain temperature, so the medicine is kept cold, then brought out and filled into syringes as needed. On Tuesday I walked over 16,000 steps in just a very small area of the stadium - lots of back and forth. I really enjoy being at the stadium and helping. I’ve met so many nice people.

READING

I completed “Grit” by Angela Duckworth. It’s a great book about perseverance, drive, motivation, dedication and the relentless pursuit of finding something that’s fulfilling, whether it’s painting, swimming, business or family. My new book is “Washington’s Crossing,” which was recommended to me by my cousin. He has studied military strategy and history for years and says this book is one of the very best. I love that the book begins with a study of the painting of Washington crossing the Delaware.

I’m still listening to “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins. It’s a great book but I save it for walks, so I’m only hearing short snippets at a time.

OTIS & JULIUS

The boys are doing great. We had a little mishap on Tuesday while I was at The Benz. Julius, my flower lover, destroyed my azalea still life that I’d set up to paint. Fortunately, we have a ton of beautiful azaleas in bloom in our yard. Plus, Julius is so cute, he can pretty much do whatever he wants :)
